Gert Riemersma of Routescene will be presenting a paper on the first day of the Skytech 2016 Survey Conference (27th January 2016, 11:00) entitled “The Transformational Potential of UAV LiDAR Surveys”.

SkyTech is a two-day B2B tradeshow for the commercial UAS industry. Now in its second year, SkyTech will include an exhibition, three conferences, workshops, product launches and marketing opportunities for the commercial UAS community. SkyTech covers UAS usage across a range of markets including construction, agriculture, utilities, infrastructure, energy, mining, oil & gas, emergency services, surveying, mapping and security.

UAVs and LiDAR are two emerging technologies which are disrupting the way that conventional surveys are undertaken. Applying the two technologies together provides for a very strong mix and enables high-resolution surveys to be undertaken in areas which would have previously been difficult or impossible to survey. The survey is typically much quicker to undertake and the turnaround time for the results are typically measured in the order of days rather than weeks.

You would think a LiDAR survey is relatively straightforward to undertake; you fly a UAV along a route, collect the data and then process. However, it is important to be reminded that Quality Control and robust survey methodology are as important as ever to ensure that the results stand up to scrutiny and are as accurate as possible.

Gert’s presentation will explain how we have taken these two emerging technologies and developed the Routescene LidarPod®, will provide insight as a result of real experiences using the system and explore the untapped potential this technology offers.
