Recommended drone platforms for Routescene UAV LiDAR mapping system

Introduction

The Routescene UAV LiDAR mapping system has been designed to be drone agnostic. It will be able to fly under any drone that can carry a payload of 3.3kg (7.3llbs). This weight includes the LidarPod and all peripherals such as mounting kit, cables and GNSS antennas.

Below is a selection of aerial platforms and your choice will depend on your application and the final results you wish to achieve:

1. Multicopters

The most common drone our customers fly with the Routescene LiDAR mapping system. It is a stable flying platform, widely used across many industries worldwide and spare parts are readily available. This drone is no longer being manufactured.

The Raven is capable of lifting a 10kg payload and maintain maneuverability. Made from carbon fiber and 6061 aluminum. Tough folding aircraft in X8 configuration.

Quick detach fixed landing gear is used, allowing the LidarPod to be easily removed and cased while still installed in the landing gear, for quick and simple deployment and secure transportation.

The Offshore Aviation OA-8B Dragon is a custom built UAS system for LIDAR survey. All US made components IAW Department of Defence guidance is US Army AWR certified. The aircraft comes as standard with ADS-B in/out, high intensity anti-collision lighting and a mounting plate for the Routescene LidarPod. The two 22,000Mah batteries enable a 35 minute flight time. A long endurance battery option is available which increases flight time to 45 minutes.

3. UAV helicopters

]The Airboxer is a long range unmanned helicopter with a three-blade single rotor. Because of its’ size, weight and capabilities, it creates a class on its own. It brings industrial reliability into the UAV market at an unprecedented small size. Consider the Airboxer as a down-sized version of a manned helicopter. Both the gearboxes and the rotor systems are rated and tested for a TBO of 1,000 hours within standard operational conditions. Propulsion is provided by an air-cooled boxer engine with fuel injection. The aircraft’s main fuel tank has a 6.5 liters AVGAS capacity. The Airboxer will lift payloads of 5.0 kgs for several hours at sea level.

 

4. Manned helicopters

The Routescene UAV LiDAR system can also be mounted onto a helicopter. Please note that the ideal height for flying the LidarPod is 40-60m.
